An age-set system is an institution of social and political organization, documented extensively among East African pastoralist peoples such as the Maasai, Nuer, Karimojong, and Nandi, in which individuals, typically young men, are formally initiated together into a named age-set at a particular life stage and then move collectively through a fixed sequence of age-grades, each carrying distinct social roles, ritual obligations, and rights, over the following decades, so that authority and responsibility within the society are distributed according to age-grade membership rather than kinship lineage or hereditary office. Among the Maasai, for example, men initiated together pass collectively through the grades of junior warrior (moran), senior warrior, and eventually elder, with each transition marked by its own communal ceremony, and the warrior grade traditionally bearing responsibility for defense and cattle-raiding while senior elder grades hold ritual authority and final decision-making power over the community. Anthropologists, notably including S. N. Eisenstadt in his comparative studies of age-organized societies, have analyzed age-set systems as providing an alternative structural basis for social integration and the allocation of authority that cuts across kinship and lineage divisions, binding people from different families and clans together through shared age-cohort identity and creating a regularized generational transfer of responsibility that does not depend on hereditary succession. Age-set systems remain actively practiced, in varying degrees of traditional and adapted form, among a number of East African pastoralist societies today, and continue to be a major comparative reference point in the anthropology of non-kinship-based social and political organization.
