A stock exchange, also called a securities exchange or bourse, is an exchange where stockbrokers and traders buy and sell securities such as shares of stock, bonds and other financial instruments. Stock exchanges may also provide facilities for issuing and redeeming such securities and instruments, including capital events such as the payment of income and dividends, and they often function as continuous auction markets in which buyers and sellers complete transactions through open outcry at a central trading floor or through an electronic system.
