Alain Touraine was a French sociologist, born in 1925, who served as research director at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, where he founded the Centre d'etude des mouvements sociaux. He was an important figure in the founding of French sociology of work after the Second World War and later became a sociologist of social movements, studying in particular the May 1968 student movement in France and the Solidarity trade union movement in communist Poland. He died in 2023.
