Doug McAdam is an American sociologist, born on August 31, 1951, who is a professor of sociology at Stanford University. His early work developed the political process model of social movement analysis, applied in his 1982 book Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency, 1930-1970, a study of the United States civil rights movement. His later book Freedom Summer won the C. Wright Mills Award in 1990, he directed the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences from 2001 to 2005, and he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2003.
