George Marcus

George Emanuel Marcus is an American anthropologist, born in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, in 1946, and a Chancellor's Professor at the University of California, Irvine, after chairing the anthropology department at Rice University for twenty five years. He founded the journal Cultural Anthropology and, with Michael M. J. Fischer, co-wrote Anthropology as Cultural Critique (1986), a foundational text of the discipline's reflexive and postmodern turn that argued for new research methods attentive to how communities change through global connection rather than remaining isolated and local. He also edited the eight volume Late Editions series examining contemporary cultural change and wrote Ethnography Through Thick and Thin (1998).
