Giovanni Arrighi was an Italian economist and sociologist, born in 1937, who became a world-systems analyst and, from 1998, professor of sociology at Johns Hopkins University. His work, translated into more than fifteen languages, examined the long-term evolution of global capitalism, including the historical shift of economic power toward East Asia. He died in 2009.
