Harrison C. White

Harrison Colyar White was an American sociologist, born on March 21, 1930, and died on May 18, 2024, who held the Giddings Professorship of Sociology at Columbia University. He played an influential role in what became known as the Harvard Revolution in social network analysis and in the New York School of relational sociology, and is credited with developing mathematical models of social structure including vacancy chains and blockmodels. His work helped lead a broader shift in sociology toward models built on patterns of relations between people rather than on the attributes and attitudes of individuals.
