French sociologist and public intellectual whose interlocking concepts of habitus, cultural capital and field explain how social structures reproduce themselves through embodied, largely unconscious dispositions rather than through explicit rules; by the late twentieth century he had become one of the most cited social scientists in the world, though critics argue his account of habitus tips toward determinism.
