Ranajit Guha was an Indian historian, born in 1923, and the founder of the Subaltern Studies Collective. His scholarship challenged traditional elite-centered historical narratives, emphasizing the agency of peasants and subaltern communities in shaping historical processes, and his influential work on peasant insurgency in colonial India left a lasting mark on South Asian history, postcolonial studies and historiography. He was named an honorary fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1996. He died in 2023.
