Tim Ingold

Tim Ingold is a British social anthropologist, born in Kent in 1948, who holds the Chair of Social Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen. Educated at Cambridge, he developed the concept of the taskscape and has written widely on environmental perception, language, technology and human-animal relations, drawing on phenomenology and process philosophy, particularly the work of Henri Bergson and Alfred North Whitehead, to argue for a relational approach to human development that challenges standard genetic and cultural-transmission models. He previously held the Max Gluckman Professorship at the University of Manchester and has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 1997; he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2022.
