Ulf Hannerz

Ulf Hannerz is a Swedish social anthropologist, born in Malmo in 1942, and professor emeritus of social anthropology at Stockholm University, where his work helped establish the department as a center for research on technology, media and social policy. He is known for pioneering work on globalization, urban anthropology, multi-sited ethnography and cultural theory, and has been ranked among the most influential anthropologists of the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries. He chaired the European Association of Social Anthropologists, directed the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, and edited the journal Ethnos; he is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and received the Retzius Gold Medal from the Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography in 2010.
