W. Richard Scott is an American sociologist, born December 18, 1932, who is emeritus professor at Stanford University. He is a leading figure in institutional theory and organization science, known for his research on how organizations are shaped by their institutional environments, including the regulative, normative and cultural-cognitive elements that give social behavior meaning and stability. His work, developed alongside Stanford colleagues including John W. Meyer, helped establish sociological institutionalism as a major approach to the study of organizations.
