Walter W. Powell

Walter Woodrow Powell, also known as Woody Powell, is an American sociologist, born on August 15, 1951, who has been a professor at Stanford University since 1999, holding appointments across education, sociology, organizational behavior, management science and engineering, and communication. He is known for his contributions to organizational theory, particularly the school known as new institutionalism, and to network theory, and he has been an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute since 2000. He earned his doctorate and master's degree in sociology from the State University of New York, Stony Brook, and his bachelor's degree from Florida State University.
