Basque people

The Basque are an ethnic group of the western Pyrenees region spanning northern Spain and southwestern France, distinguished above all by Euskara (Basque), a language isolate with no established relationship to any other language family, whose survival predates the arrival of Indo-European languages in Western Europe. The Basque Autonomous Community and Navarre in Spain hold significant devolved political and fiscal autonomy, achieved in part through a documented and, for a substantial period, violent nationalist movement, most notably the armed group ETA, active from 1959 until its declared 2018 dissolution following a 2011 ceasefire. Traditional Basque social and legal custom (fueros) historically included distinctive inheritance and land-tenure practices, and Basque rural sport (including pelota and rural strength competitions) remains a well-documented and actively practiced element of communal identity.
