This subcategory gathers social groups of Europe documented as distinct peoples within or across modern national borders, including the Basque people and Catalans of the Iberian peninsula, the Sami of northern Scandinavia, and the Cossacks of the Eastern European steppe, historically a distinct military and social community rather than a single ethnicity. It does not include the diasporic and stateless Roma, carried instead under Diasporic, Religious and Modern Social Formations because their defining feature is dispersion rather than a home territory, and it does not cover European nation states, which Political and Geography carry.
